In 2001, the Baltimore area was home to a pair of Fortune 500 companies -- Towson-based tool manufacturer Black & Decker and Constellation Energy, parent company of Baltimore Gas & Electric. It was also home to money manager Legg Mason, which would crack the list in 2009.
