The lobby of the Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric Opera House was jammed with about 700 people for a VIP pre-party for "One Night, One Show, One Cause," the annual fundraising concert put together by Paul Reed Smith Guitars to benefit the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Medicine. This year, the legendary '80s band Journey would be taking the stage. Among those most excited about that fact was Paul Reed Smith himself. "This is awesome," he said. "Journey's playing in Baltimore. At an opera house? Everybody's jacked up." "Journey [is] maybe one of the greatest bands in the universe," said Dr. Bill Nelson, Kimmel Cancer Center director. "I'm really excited. I heard their sound check. They're off the hook," said Jon Levinson, who co-chaired the event with Ed Kiernan, and ran the evening's auction of guitars signed by sports and music celebrities. That was followed by a fashion show, hosted by former "Real Housewife of D.C." Michaele Salahi, who was unaware she would soon hit her own emotional high later in the evening. During the concert, she was surprised by her boyfriend, Journey lead guitarist Neal Schon, as he proposed to her onstage and presented her with an 11.4-carat diamond ring. -- Sloane Brown |
