( Karen Jackson, for The Baltimore Sun / December 4, 2012 ) Peter Holland, Victoria Schultz and Scott Borison. Folks filled the Radisson Plaza Lord Baltimore Hotel ballroom to both honor and be honored at the Maryland Legal Services Corporation's annual awards reception. Some -- like Herb S. Garten, Peter A. Holland, Brenda Bratton Blom, Lisa C. Jordan, and John Wheeler -- were being given specific awards for their above-and-beyond efforts in providing access to legal services for Maryland's low-income people. But most everyone there was involved in the organization's mission. "This evening recognizes people who go beyond their regular call of duty -- many are volunteers -- to help those who are in need of legal assistance, and I think that's a wonderful thing," said Wilhelm Joseph, Maryland Legal Aid Bureau executive director. "And it's just an extraordinary turnout. ... You see lawyers. You see judges. You see so many advocates, many of whom work in legal services programs. Many of them are in private practice but really just care deeply about access to justice. It's just a great celebratory night where we get to thank the people who do extraordinary work every year and celebrate everything they do and all the important efforts they make on behalf of people who desperately need help," said Susan Erlichman, MLSC executive director. "It's my favorite night of the year." -- Sloane Brown |
