Scene and Heard: Casa Baltimore/Limay's Salsa Sensation

But inside 2640 -- an events space in the old rectory of St. John's United Methodist Church -- the atmosphere was hot, hot, hot. At the Salsa Sensation party, Latin music blared from a sound system, manned by Guillermo Brown, producer/host of WEAA's "Fiesta Musical." Meanwhile, Tabitha Hitchye-Holliday, Dance In Time Productions and Baltimore Salsa Dance Company salsa teacher, put folks through their paces on the dance floor. The evening of food, drink and salsa was a fundraiser for Casa Baltimore/Limay, a friendship-city project between the people of Baltimore and San Juan de Limay, Nicaragua. "This time of year is a low period. We could use a lift, so we figured maybe other people did, too," said Barbara Larcom, Casa Baltimore/Limay project manager. "We have wonderful people come with an enthusiastic spirit. It's a fun night," said Carol Berman, who was serving double-duty as Casa Baltimore/Limay treasurer and the evening's bartender. Among those who had turned out for the event was a group of students from Loyola University Maryland, led by Alejandro Gutierrez, Loyola senior. "I'm like the president of an unofficial salsa group at Loyola," Gutierrez said. Leslie Salgado, Maryland Transit Administration civil engineer, brought a group from the Howard County Friends of Latin America. Some joined in on the salsa lesson. Virginia Rodino, Service Employees International Union senior communication strategist, opted to skip the lesson and wait for the dancing.
