Opened in 1965, The Store Ltd. is one of the few original shops in The Village and is the only one that occupies its original (although larger) space.
Co-owned by William Steinmetz and internationally-known, award-winning jewelry designer Betty Cooke, the store specializes in sleek, modern gifts and housewares that reflect good design concepts. In addition to the simple, architectural, museum-level jewelry designed by Cooke, there is also an impressive collection of designer clothing, with an emphasis on unusual textures and fibers, and imported glassware.
The variety and price range offer something for everyone. If you're looking for a baby shower gift, there are Manhattan Toy Company stuffed animals.
This is also a great place to go for bridal shower or engagement party gifts. Depending on how good the friend is, you can pick up anything from cylindrical colored glass or stone vases in various shapes and sizes, Iittala colored glassware and Nambe serving pieces to leather picture frames, art and coffee table books and paperweights.
While you're out shopping, pick up some fun trinkets for yourself, too. Try on a Joan Vass sweater or a Japanese shibori fabric piece. Dress it up a bit with a leather or canvas pocketbook, a streamlined Skagen watch from Denmark and a collectible Betty Cooke ring or necklace in assorted materials from beach pebbles and South Sea pearls to diamonds and gold.
Before you leave, be sure to get a Gene Meyer tie and a Fisher Space Pen for him, assorted colored plastic boxes for the young collectors, and some L'Occitane bath products for mutual pampering.
The next time you're searching for a gift, stop at The Store Ltd., and you should be able to find something appropriate, no matter what the occasion.
