Smelkinson taking over HCC men's basketball team

Former Howard County basketball Player of the Year Mike Smelkinson is a man on the move.

Just one year after taking over the head boys’ basketball coaching duties at Marriotts Ridge High School, Smelkinson has been named the new men’s basketball head coach at Howard Community College.

He takes over the coaching duties from Randolph Edison Jr., who had served as coach of the Dragons for the last seven seasons. Having just graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2008, this will be Smelkinson’s third coaching position in the past four years.

Immediately after college he became the assistant men’s basketball coach at St. Mary’s, the school where he started at point guard and served as a team captain as a senior.

Then last year he led Marriotts Ridge to an 8-16 record after the program had gone winless the previous season.

In high school, Smelkinson led Long Reach to consecutive county championships and garnered POY honors in 2004.
