River Hill grad Katie Harman, now a senior distance runner at James Madison University, is preparing to compete at the Stanford Invitational on Friday night. A good performance could potentially qualify her for the NCAA regional meet in May. Katie was a standout during her four years at River Hill, winning multiple Runner of the Year honors between cross country, indoor and outdoor track. She hasn’t slowed down since arriving at James Madison, winning elite honors such as CAA women’s cross country athlete of the year in 2011 and CAA Scholar-Athlete of the year for track and field in 2012.  More...

Former Glenelg all-county basketball player Troy Spurrier helped St. Mary’s College of Maryland capture the Capital Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon. Spurrier, a freshman for the Seahawks, scored four points and grabbed two rebounds in the championship game. Wilde Lake senior Tim Virostek is getting set for the final indoor track meet of his high school career, heading down to the PG Sports Complex on Tuesday for the 3A state championship meet. Virostek has already had a fantastic winter, starting back in December and continuing through the county and region meets. He won the 500- and 800-meter runs at the county championships, while capturing the 800 and 1,600 at the 3A East regional.  More...

And now she is preparing to defend her 3A state hurdles title next Tuesday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. Reservoir junior 170-pounder Wesley Beattie has the distinction of clinching two dual meet victories for his team this season with last-bout wins: Dec. 20 against Oakland Mills, and Jan. 22 at Mt. Hebron. He was also crowned as a champion at the Grapple at the Brook tournament. Last season, wrestling at 145 pounds, Beattie finished 24-11 and placed fourth at the county tournament, but failed to place at regionals. This year, he is the fourth-ranked wrestler in a very tough Howard County 170-pound weight class that features Wilde Lake's undefeated Tola Morakinyo, Glenelg's Anthony Pagnotta and River Hill sophomore Brian Kirby.  More...

Marriotts Ridge senior cheerleader Briana Feldman helped lead her team to first place at this winter's county championship meet Feb. 2. The Mustangs scored 129.7 points to edge River Hill and Mt. Hebron for the title. River Hill junior 106-pounder Michael Beck, who improved to 27-0 by pinning Owings Mills' Jake Rendelman in the finals of the Franklin Invitational Jan. 19, takes a 30-second Timeout. As a first year varsity wrestler last winter, Beck finished 38-11, losing in overtime in the county finals and failing to place at the state tournament. But he is now the fourth-ranked 106-pounder in the state.  More...
