Sports notices: It's basketball team tryout time

Basketball

The Columbia Ravens are holding tryouts a Howard County Dancel Y of Central Maryland. Players must attend at least one tryout session, but perferably two or all three. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to check in and warm up. Players should bring a basketball and water and be dressed for the tryout session. Parents should go to the Ravens website to pre-register for tryouts.

The tryouts are:

4th grade girls: Sat., Sept. 10, 9-11 a.m., Sept. 13, 6-7:30 p.m. and Sept. 18, 4-5:45 p.m.

5th grade girls: Sat., Sept. 10, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Sept. 15, 6-7:30 p.m. and Sept. 18, 2:15-4 p.m.

6th grade girls: Sat., Sept. 10, 1-3 p.m., Sept. 16, 7:30-9 p.m. and Sept. 18, 12:30-2:15 p.m.

The Western Howard County Force youth travel teams are holding tryouts in September for the upcoming winter season for the girls and boys fourth through eighth grade teams.

The Force sixth-grade boys team tryouts will be held Sept. 13, 15 and 20 from 7:30-9:30 p.m., at Glenwood Middle School (note change in site), and Sept. 14 from 7:30-9:30 p.m., at Folly Quarter Middle School. Other dates may be added.

Tennis

Teams are forming to represent Howard County in the Baltimore Tennis Patrons Junior Indoor Tennis League in four divisions. Boys and girls in grades 4-12 are welcome. New player evaluations will be held Sept. 15, 6-8:30 p.m.; and Sept. 18, 2:30-5:30 p.m., at the Owen Brown Tennis Club, in Columbia. Players only need to come to one session but need to come ready to hit tennis balls.

Field hockey

Team Baltimore Field Hockey Club will hold tryouts Oct. 1, 10-11 a.m., at Garrison Forest School, in Reisterstown. The tryouts are free and open to all U-14, U-16 and U-19 players. The Capitol Pegasus Field Hockey Club will hold tryouts Oct. 16, 10-11 a.m., at Champions Field House in Rockville. Tryouts are free and open to all U-14, U-16 and U-19 players. Running

The 25th annual BWI Airport 4-mile run and 2-mile family walk will be held Sept. 25 at the BWI Airport Midfield Cargo Warehouse Complex. The race starts at 8 a.m. and benefits children with Down syndrome. Walkers and runners of all ages and abilities are invited to participate. Cost: $25 (adults); $10 (children 13-under). Bullseye Running is hosting a 9k Around the Fairway Nov. 5. This is a new fun event running the golf cart path at the Timbers at Troy golf course with a brunch in the clubhouse to follow. Go to http://www.bullseyerunning.com.

Baseball

The Savage 15-U summer travel team will hold tryings Sat. and Sun., Sept. 10 and 11, 5-7 p.m., at Reservoir High School. Players are encouraged to attend both sessions. If you cannot attend either session, email zilkafamily@verizon.net to arrange for a private workout.

The Columbia Red Storm travel team will hold tryouts for the 2012 season Sat. and Sun., Sept. 10-11, 3-5 p.m., at Oakland Mills High School. The Red Storm competes in the MABA high school travel division.

The American Legion Columbia Post 300 will hold tryouts for the 2012 Maryland Senior American Legion Summer season Sat., Sept. 10, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Centennial High School. Volleyball

Softball

HCYP fall fastpitch softball registration is open for girls ages 5-17. This is an instructional program for 8-U, 10-U and 12-U players.
