Rec sports: Two Ravens girls basketball teams are on the top of their game

Basketball

The Columbia Ravens girls ninth-grade team had an awesome AAU season. The girls started the season by winning the Maryland Flames Regional Warmup, then they moved on to claim first place in the Charm City Mid Atlantic Explosion, Slammin Jam at CCBC, Beachbound II and the Coaches Choice Inner Harbor Challenge.

In addition, the Ravens placed second in the Charm City National Invite, Beachbound III and the USA Invitational at Penn State, where they ranked ninth overall out of 48 teams.

The girls also participated in the US Junior Nationals at the Capital Sports complex in Prince George's County. The team consists of Alexis Green, Emma Hoesman, Samantha Mocniak, Shannon Kelliher, Kasey Calloway, Breya Wallace, Erika Faass, Symrin Greenhow, Shannon Tyler and Zelor Massaquoi.

The Columbia Ravens fifth-grade girls capped their AAU season by winning the Beachbound 3 Tournament in Ocean City. This was their fourth tournament championship this AAU season. Their final AAU tournament and league play was 36-12.

During their run in Ocean City, the Ravens defeated TeamTriCounty Wolfpack, 50-5, connecting on 7 of 14 three-point attempts by five different players. They also defeated Maryland Dream, 30-17. The girls then avenged an earlier 32-27 loss in the tournament winning the championship game, 31-17, against the very talented Central Pennsylvania Dynamite of Altoona, Pa.

Members of the Ravens team are Taysha Bender, Selena Robinson, Emy Nelson, Bobbie Haney, Courtney Furr, Emma Schettig, Jessica Foster and Madison Burris.

Running

Howard County Striders

Fifty-nine runners participated in the Howard County Striders Summer Sizzler weekly race at Burleigh Manor Middle School Aug. 31. Ted Poulos and Lori Kruus led the way in the two-miler, while Karsten Brown and Caroline Bauer won the five-mile run.
