Glenelg's players had not forgotten that the only loss they suffered last year was to South River in the finals of the South River tournament.

The Gladiators won this year's South River tournament on Saturday by shutting out both Holy Cross, 6-0, and Bryn Mawr, 4-0. South River won the consolation game, 5-0, over Holy Cross.

"Our goal was to win this tournament," said Glenelg senior Alyssa Parker. On the day, she had five goals and assisted on three others.

Although her team is talented, Glenelg coach Ginger Kincaid wondered how it would play after going nearly a week without practice due to the rain. Plus there were three untested starters and a fourth starter, a veteran, missed the first game because she was taking a college entrance exam.

"Amy Frazier, Maribeth Blonchek and Kendall Lutts stepped up to replace the graduated players and they played great," Kincaid said.

"I have to give Glenelg a lot of credit. They were a strong team of really good players," said Bryn Mawr coach Jeanette Budzik, whose team played three games in less than 24 hours. The Mawrtians beat their archrival Roland Park, 2-1, the night before the tournament.

"We did have some shots" against Glenelg, Budzik said. "I really did feel like it went back and forth but when they scored and your legs are starting to wear …"

Glenelg had two goals in less than a minute in the second half as Parker and Danielle Baker traded assists with each other. That scoring flurry iced the game.

"That was great," said Morgan Philie. "It really let them know that we were there, we were in it and we weren't going to give up."

Bryn Mawr defeated South River, 3-2, in strokes in the first game of the tournament. The two teams were tied through regulation and one sudden-victory period.

"Can I tell you how many year's we've come here and I've asked (South River coach) Katie Corcoran, 'Are you sure you want us here?' " Kincaid said. "This (victory) was a real plus for us."
