Wrestling: Glenelg defeats Marriotts Ridge, 60-12

Jason JohnsonNick Williams

Glenelg may have been flying under the radar in 2012 after losing to regular season county champion River Hill on Jan. 3 and finishing 3-5 at the ultracompetitive McDonogh Holiday Duals tournament in late December. But as evidenced by a 60-12 thrashing of a formidable Marriotts Ridge squad on Tuesday night, the defending state dual meet champion Gladiators are still a force to be reckoned with.

Glenelg (10-1, 14-6) scored eight pins and a tech fall in the win, and built a 60-0 lead before the Mustangs — who recently placed third at the Meade High's Battle at the Base tournament — got on the board.

Marriotts Ridge did end the night on a positive note, as Jeff Barbera (106), Nick Spano (113, pin) and Christian Jordan (120) closed out the match with consecutive Mustang wins.

Glenelg is closing in on clinching home gym advantage for the upcoming regional duals on Feb. 8, but still has matches at Perry Hall (Feb. 2) and Tuscarora (Feb. 4) coming up.
