The Howard County Striders/Bullseye Running Friday Night Cross Country Series on the high school cross country courses begins June 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Wilde Lake High. Adults and children are welcome.
Other races in the series are June 15 (Oakland Mills), June 29 (River Hill), July 6 (Centennial), July 20 (Reservoir) and July 27 (Hammond). Register ($5) between 5:30 and 6:30 at each race location. Run in three of the races and earn a Striders/Bullseye Running performance shirt.
The county rec department is sponsoring Phil Lang's All-Star Running Camps for ages 8-18. The camps are week long. Register at http://activenet12.active.com/howardcounty.

Track and field
The county rec department is holding a Track and Field camp, June 18-22, at Oakland Mills High School from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Participants will be given the opportunity to try every event and the week will conclude with an exhibition meet. Cost: $120.

Oakland Mills High School will sponsor soccer camps for players ages 5-14. The camp weeks are June 25-29 and July 16-20. The camps meet from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Cost: $95 per week. Email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 443-801-9881.
The Long Reach High School field hockey program is hosting a one-day clinic, June 13, from 4-5 p.m. at the school. The clinic is for incoming freshmen girls interested in trying out for the Long Reach team. No playing experience is necessary. Current and former Long Reach players will be on hand to review expectations for tryouts and the upcoming season. Parents are welcome to stay and ask questions.
Participants will need running shoes, water and a field hockey stick. The clinic will meet on the Long Reach track. Email questions to varsity coach email@example.com.
Team registration is being accepted for the Maryland Summer Field Hockey Festival scheduled for July 20-22 in Westminster. The festival is open to all travel level school, recreation and club affiliated teams.
Competition is available in the middle school (U-14), junior varsity and varsity high-school, and the Coed age 21-and-older levels. All teams are guaranteed four games, with additional play-off and championships scheduled where applicable.
Kernan Sports Medicine is offering pre participation sports physicals for high school athletes. Cost: $30 per athlete for completion of the Kernan Sports Medicine physical form. TriColumbia announces its fifth annual Kidz Triathlon will be held July 22 as part of the Maryland Youth Triathlon Series. The Kidz Tri is for ages 7-15. Race distances are age appropriate.

The Maryland Juniors Volleyball Club is hosting a series of juniors volleyball summer programs. The camps and clinics were designed to meet the need of all levels of juniors volleyball players. The Howard County NAACP is hosting its 10th annual Golf Tournament June 11 at the Fairway Hills Golf Course. The event begins promptly with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Proceeds from the event are used to support annual scholarships to high school students, ACT-SO competitions, the Back-to-School program, health initiatives and other NAACP programs.

Leader's Baseball Camp has multiple sessions for rising second to ninth graders, including pitching and catching. This camp includes instruction from current District 5 Coach of the Year Adam Leader and his staff, visits from professional baseball players, discussions with professional sports physical therapists that deal with arm care and a trip to an Orioles game. Professional Baseball Training is offering two separate weeks of camp at Howard High School. Campers will be split up by age group and have their own instructor(s). The camps run July 16-20 and 23-27. Camp options include single-day, half day, full day, full week and both weeks. The full day is from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and a discount is offered for those attending full day both weeks. The half day camp is 9 a.m.-noon.
The camp levels are Rookies (rising third-fifth graders), Minors (rising sixth-eighth graders) and Majors (rising ninth-12th graders). The Majors Camp only runs from 9 a.m.-noon.

Mt. Hebron High School is hosting a fastpitch hitting camp June 11-15. The camp, run by coach Chuck Struhar, is open to students in grades 3-8 (incoming ninth graders) and will focus on hitting, bunting and baserunning. Email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Maryland Stars fastpitch camp will be held June 25-29 at Mayeski Park in Carroll County. The camp is for players ages 7-13 and is offered in two time slots (9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 12:30-3:30 p.m.). Cost: $120 per session (if registered before June 1). Email email@example.com.
The Columbia Tennis Committee will host an Independence Day Tournament (July 5-8) and the Columbia Open (Sept. 13-16, 20-23). The tournaments are open to those turning 18 or older during 2012. Play will be based on the U.S. Tennis Association's National Tennis Rating Program. Men's and women's singles will be offered as will mixed doubles. Entry fee: $15 (CA members), $25 (non-members). The county rec department is inviting boys and girls to register for its Summer Rugby League (ages 6-18) and rugby camps (ages 7-16). Ages 6-14 play a two-hand touch version of the game; ages 15-18 play the tackle version. The teams practice twice a week from 6:30-8:30 p.m. starting the second week of June. Football and cheer
The Howard County Terps youth tackle football and cheerleading is open for registration. The Terps are for ages 5 through 14. Practices start July 30 and games begin in late August. Home games will be played on the new turf fields at Blandair Park. Register at 410-313-7275.

The cheer and poms programs need head coaches, assistant coaches, teen coaches, competition coaches, tumbling coaches, stunt coaches, dance coaches, fitness trainers and administrative helpers. Volunteers are needed for the 4th annual 24 Hours of Booty charity bicycling event, which will be held Aug. 25-26 in the Columbia Gateway area. More than 600 cycling participants are expected and 200 volunteers are needed. Volunteer shifts are assigned in three- and four-hour increments and opportunities are available for individuals or groups.
