Soccer

Field hockey

The Long Reach High School field hockey program is hosting a one-day clinic, June 13, from 4-5 p.m. at the school. The clinic is for incoming freshmen girls interested in trying out for the team. No experience necessary. Current and former Long Reach players will be on hand to review expectations for tryouts and the upcoming season. Parents are welcome to stay and ask questions. Participants will need running shoes, water and a field hockey stick. The clinic will meet on the Long Reach track. Email questions to rashmi_bhanot@hcpss.org.

Sports physicals

Kernan Sports Medicine is offering pre-participation sports physicals for high school athletes. Cost: $30 per athlete for completion of the Kernan Sports Medicine physical form. There is an added $5 fee for each additional form. Call 410-298-0990 ext.15 to speak with a certified athletic trainer to set up an appointment. Walk-ins not accepted.

June 24, 9 a.m.-noon, Kernan Physical Therapy in Woodlawn.

July 22, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Central Maryland Rehabilitation in Columbia. (Must register by July 18).

Aug. 5, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., University of Maryland Orthopedic Associates in Columbia. (Must register by Aug. 1).

Triathlon

TriColumbia's 5th annual Kidz Triathlon will be held July 22 as part of the Maryland Youth Triathlon Series. The Kidz Tri is for ages 7-15. Race distances are age appropriate. Volleyball

Golf

The Howard County NAACP is hosting its 10th annual Golf Tournament June 11 at Fairway Hills. The event begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Proceeds are used to support annual scholarships to high school students, ACT-SO competitions, the Back-to-School program, health initiatives and other NAACP programs. Special Olympics

Orioles fans who plan to attend games at Camden Yards this year have the opportunity to help Special Olympics athletes at the same time. Special Olympics has obtained vouchers for $15 tickets to all Oriole games except the prime games. Five dollars from each ticket purchased will go to Special Olympics. Baseball

Softball

Mt. Hebron High School is hosting a fastpitch hitting camp June 11-15. The camp, run by coach Chuck Struhar, is open to students in grades 3-8 (incoming ninth graders) and will focus on hitting, bunting and baserunning. Email cstruhar@hcpss.org.

 

The Maryland Stars fastpitch camp will be held June 25-29 at Mayeski Park in Carroll County. The camp is for players ages 7-13 and is offered in two time slots (9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 12:30-3:30 p.m.). $120 per session (if registered before June 1). Email cwarholic@gmail.com.

Tennis

The Columbia Tennis Committee will host an Independence Day Tournament (July 5-8) and the Columbia Open (Sept. 13-16, 20-23). The tournaments are open to those turning 18 or older during 2012. Play will be based on the USTA's national rating program. Men's and women's singles will be offered as will mixed doubles. Entry fee: $15 (CA members), $25 (non-members). Rugby

The county rec department is inviting boys and girls to register for its Summer Rugby League (ages 6-18) and rugby camps (ages 7-16). Ages 6-14 play a two-hand touch version of the game; ages 15-18 play the tackle version. The teams practice twice a week from 6:30-8:30 p.m. starting the second week of June. Football and cheer

The Howard County Terps youth tackle football and cheerleading is open for registration. The Terps are for ages 5 through 14. Practices start July 30 and games begin in late August. Home games will be played on the new turf fields at Blandair Park. Register at 410-313-7275.

 

Register for the Ellicott City Patriots football, cheerleading or new poms squad. Ages 4-14 are welcome (four year olds are for junior cheer). Register through parks and recreation at http://www.hcrpsports.com.

The cheer and poms programs need head coaches, assistant coaches, teen coaches, competition coaches, tumbling coaches, stunt coaches, dance coaches, fitness trainers and administrative helpers. Volunteers

Volunteers are needed for the 4th annual 24 Hours of Booty charity bicycling event, which will be held Aug. 25-26 in the Columbia Gateway area. More than 600 cycling participants are expected and 200 volunteers are needed. Volunteer shifts are assigned in three- and four-hour increments and opportunities are available for individuals or groups.

The 24 Hours of Booty benefits the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults.
