Waterloo Elementary School is hosting a Family Fit 5k and Fun Run 1k, Sat., March 17 at Centennial High School. Check in begins at 7:45 a.m.; the run/walk begins at 9 a.m. The event is being held to raise money for two cancer related funds — the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults and the Children's Roads to Recovery. Race day registration is $15 per family (checks should be made out to the chosen fund.)

The Howard County Junior Striders spring track registration is open. Practice starts March 26 and will be held Monday and Thursday evenings through May 21. There are two locations: sprinters and field event athletes born 2005 and before will practice at Oakland Mills, distance runners born in 2005 and before and all participants born in 2006 or 2007 will practice at Atholton. Freedom HKY (formerly Spitfire Field Hockey), a competitive, year-round field hockey club run by former national team players, will hold tryouts for its 2012 spring outdoor teams on March 15 and 22 at the University of Maryland College Park and March 25 and April 1 at Western Regional Park.
Freedom fields boys and girls teams for U-10 through U-14 and women's teams for U-16 and U-19.
Select teams practice up to twice a week and will play in spring and summer competitive tournaments.
In conjunction with Howard County General Hospital, the River Hill High School Boosters are offering sports physicals April 17 from 6-9 p.m. Advance registration is preferred; the cost is $25. The Cindy LaRue League, an informal co-rec softball league, is looking for players age 19 and older —especially couples and women — from all parts of Howard County. The River Hill Boosters are sponsoring summer sports camps at River Hill High School. The camps are designed to help young athletes improve their fundamental athletic skills. The Maryland Exiles Youth Rugby team is holding tryouts through the month of March. Experienced and inexperienced players are welcome to join the Exiles in their quest for a third straight Potomac Rugby Union League Championship. The rec department's adult co-rec football league begins March 27. Games will take place on Tuesday nights between 6:15 and 10:30 p.m. Cost: $285 per team, plus $30 weekly due to officials.
The inaugural Adult Co-Rec Football Tournament will take place June 30-July 1. Games will run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Fee: $200 per team. Register by June 1.

The Howard County rec department is registering for the Spring Flag Football League for boys and girls ages 5-14. Games are 5-on-5 and 50 minutes long. Practices are one hour, one day per week, between 5 and 8 p.m. starting April 1. Practice locations depend on team assignment. Games are played on Sundays at Hollifield Elementary beginning April 14. Cost: $90.
Volunteer coaches are needed and receive a discount for their child.

The Howard County Terps Youth Football and Cheer program is seeking experienced and dedicated coaches for the fall season. Applicants must be available evenings and weekends during the season which begins in late July. Interviews will begin in March. Applicants will be subject to a background check before final assignment and will need to attend coaches meetings, clinics and classes before season begins.

The Waverly Woods Ladies Golf League will hold its organizational meeting Tues., March 20 at 9 a.m. at the Waverly Woods Pro Shop, 2100 Warwick Way, Marriottsville. The league is for players who have an existing handicap or are working toward acquiring one. The 18-hole league plays on Tuesday mornings. A continental breakfast will be served at the meeting and there will be a trunk show of Nike ladies golf attire. The Glen Mar Golf Classic set for May 7 at the Timbers of Troy Golf Course in Elkridge is hosted by Glen Mar United Methodist Church and will benefit Grassroots, Howard County's 24-hour crisis intervention center which shelters individuals and families who are homeless.
The format is captain's choice. Registration and breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 8:30. Entry fee: $125 (per player); $500 (foursome). Non-golfers may attend at $25 per person to join the luncheon and participate in the silent auction.
Sponsorships are available from $2,500 (corporate level) to $250 (signage on one of the 18 holes). All proceeds from tournament sponsorships, fees and the silent auction will support operations at Grassroots.
