Allie Pickens, a senior at Glenelg Country School, is about to make it official. Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. in the Upper School library at Glenelg Country, she will sign her National Letter of Intent to play field hockey for Drexel University, a Division I school in Philadelphia. Denise Zelenak is the team's coach.
With the stroke of a pen, Pickens will go from a Glenelg Country School dragon to a Drexel dragon.
Pickens has been at Glenelg Country School since 2006. She has been a four-year starting varsity player. She was named a scholar athlete in 2010. In her hockey career she has 25 assists, 17 goals and was team captain for both the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
The Dragons won the IAAM B Conference championship in 2010 and were runners-up in the 2009 game.
Pickens is a three-time IAAM B Conference All Star Team member (2009, 2010, 2011), a two-time Howard County Times All-County second team (2010, 2011) selection. She was chosen as the Maryland All State second team attack in 2010, named Washington Post's All-Metro honorable mention in 2010 and was named to Maryland State Senior All-Star Game in 2011.
Outside of high school, Pickens is a member of the Washington Wolves Club and Futures Development programs.
Pickens first learned of Drexel University when she was contacted by Zelenak during her junior year.
"They say you get a feeling when you know you're in the right place. When I visited Drexel University, I really enjoyed getting to know the team, the coaches and the program. The school has a great co-op program and I loved the city of Philadelphia — Drexel has everything I could hope for in a school."
