But the Hawks of Edgewater still had two of their best wrestlers — Jordan Orme (126) and Austin Alley (132) — warming up, and Lauer knew that his team's chances weren't good.
"I knew (at that point) it was going to be really bleak," Lauer said. "Taariq did a great job bumping up and getting the job done, but it was just too much in the middle there."
And when Orme scored a third-period pin at 126 to clinch the victory, South River was able to forfeit the final bout in preparation for it's first trip to the state duals.
"This is our seventh time (at regional duals) since I've been here in 2000 and this is the first time we've ever won, so it's big for us," Klessinger said.
River Hill, meanwhile, will now try to look on the bright side. With six wrestlers ranked top-20 by the Maryland State Wrestling Association (No. 4 Beck will be back by next weekend's county tournament, according to Lauer), River Hill is capable of winning its second straight state tournament championship.
"Last year we lost the state duals, and then we came back and won the state tournament," Mohammed said. "If we keep wrestling hard, keep training hard, we can win another title with this team."South River 34, River Hill 27

Glenelg, which lost for the first time this season last Friday against River Hill, looked strong in its 40-31 regional championship win over Oakland Mills.
The match was briefly tied, 3-3, after Oakland Mills' Robby Happy (220) and Glenelg's defending state champ Sean Twigg (285) each won hardfought matches. But after Tim Null's second-period pin at 106 put Glenelg ahead, 9-3, the Gladiatiors were never in trouble.
Mike Budock (132), Ryan Carter (138), Austin Pagnotta (145) and Anthony Pagnotta (170) also scored pins for the Gladiators, while Zach Hensley (126), Bradley Montecino (152) and Dylan Juskus (182) collected pins for the Scorpions.
Oakland Mills defeated Poolesville, 40-34, and Glenelg defeated Surratsville, 69-6, in the semifinals.
Glenelg has now won five regional dual meet titles in the last six years.
