Running

Howard County Striders

The Howard County Striders staged the 36th Metric Marathon (26.2 km) Nov 11. The race began in Columbia, than made its way to Ellicott City and back.

In the men's competition, the lead pack raced through the first two miles in 12:30, but that pace was slow for David Toller, who increased his speed and took over sole possession of the lead. A graduate of Oakland Mills and a cross-country member at Salisbury, Toller captured first place with a time of 1:38:27.

"I wanted to run about six minutes per mile," Toller said. "I went through 10 miles in around 60 minutes. It was just me and the guy on the bike."

Alyssa Hogan and Robyn Humphrey jumped out into the lead early before Hogan was able to pull away and cruise to victory in 1:54:19. Last year's Metric women's winner, Grandmaster Donna Wecker, finished third.

Some Metric Marathoners - like Mick Slonaker - had registered for the New York City Marathon before Superstorm Sandy forced the cancellation of that event. Several of those marathoners descended on the Metric Marathon.

"We had to use all that training for something," Slonaker said.
