Rec sports: SAC teams perform well at Columbus Day tournaments

The SAC U11 Yellow team won the Beach FC Columbus Day tournament in Virginia Beach earlier this month. The girls went undefeated in group play, winning 4-2, 5-4, and 9-2, including a hard-fought comeback win in the second game. The girls continued their great run in the championship, winning 4-2.

The team, coached by Ivan Croft and Michael Ehrlich, includes Ellie Lane, Ashley Bilger, Kallie Wethern, Lexi Croft, Shaelin Rennert-Ariev, Jamie Caine, Gia Parker, Abby Houff, Kelly Schluederberg, Isabella Kushner, Mia Ehrlich, Piper Berry and Annie Cole.

The U13 Girls SAC United Classic II Team placed second in the SAC Columbus Day tournament earlier this month. The team won its first two games, 5-0, to advance to the playoffs, which it won, 4-0. In the finals, the United lost, 2-0, to the Baltimore Bays. But the team, coached by Anthony McDonnell and Vicky Wilhelm, was happy with its finish, having scored 14 goals in the tournament. Members of the team: Gabby Fairley, Ava Dennis, Gabrielle Rojas, Tattiana McDonnell, Ashley Wilhelm, Kyle English, Isabel Posey, Megan Holtzman, Alejandra Ramirez, Claudia Pilcher, Madison Kater, Taylor Washington, Syndey Grossman, Elana Hamet and Claire Priestley.

Running

Seventy-five runners participated in the fourth Howard County Striders weekly series race last week. James Blackwood and Cindy Perkins were the two-mile winners, while Bob Burns and Tammy Liu Hermstein paced the 10K. Nikola Andelic and Amanda An won the 15K.

Marsha Demaree (race lead), Erin Blackwood, Nathan Capelle, George Kroeker, Tunde Morakinyo Julie Trapp were the race organizers.
