Running

The Howard County Junior Striders cross country team competed in Middletown on Oct. 14, producing one gold medal, two silver medals and two bronze medals.

The Special Olympics of Howard County hosted a cross country meet with runners also participating from Montgomery County on Oct. 7 at Centennial High School.

In cold and rainy conditions, there were 2K and 5K races.

Howard County athletes took the top three spots in the 5K, with Thomas Logue finishing in 21:37, Mark Worley in 21:45 and Julian Than in 24:49. Griffen Gunderson also ran, coming in with a time of 33:48.

Phillip Beijan of Howard County finished first in the 2K with a time of 10:51. Other county runners were Marion Machen (11:53), Sam Carder (14:27), Joey Baskcomb (16:35) and Matthew Taylor (17:36).

The River Hill High School Boosters held a 5K and one-mile family fun run on Oct. 13 on the cross-country course at the high school.

Soccer

The Soccer Association of Columbia's U12 Chelsea Blue team walked away with their division's championship trophy at the SAC United Columbus Day Tournament on Oct. 7. It was the second straight tournament championship for the team and third straight appearance in a tournament final.

The team recorded three shutouts in the tournament before edging out a 3-2 victory in the championship game. On the weekend, the team scored 18 goals and allowed only two.
