The spirited championships competition of the United States Pony Clubs was held in Lexington, VA from July 24-28. Six members of the Burntwoods Pony Club from Howard and Carroll counties competed in four disciplines as members of teams representing the Maryland region. Jill Cleveland (22) took first place in the Horse II Show Jumping competition. Laura Van Hasselt (13) was on the first place Developing Horse/Rider show jumping team. Emma Van Hasselt (17) was on the seventh place novice level eventing team. Ben Grissom (14) was on the first place polocrosse team. Christa Jolin (17) was on the fifth place senior mounted games team, and Ethan Riccio (12) was on the fifth place junior mounted games team.
All riders competing in Pony Club Championships have previously qualified by attaining top scores at their Regional Rallies throughout the country. They vie for National honors in the disciplines of: Dressage, Eventing (dressage, cross-country and stadium jumping), Mounted Games, Polocrosse (a combination of polo and lacrosse), Show Jumping, Tetrathlon (riding, running, swimming and marksmanship) and Quiz (an unmounted equine educational competition).
Every year since 1976, the final weekend of July has marked the end of the summer dive season for the Central Maryland Dive League. The CMDL and its 12 member pools offer introductional and advanced instruction to over 470 athletes in the sport of springboard diving every year.
On Sunday, July 28, the 37th CMDL Individual Championships took place at Waugh Chapel Swim Club in Gambrills, MD. The diving boards were flush with divers from area pools around the Baltimore region, including: Aberdeen Swim Club, Lochearn Community Club - Baltimore, Five Oaks Swim Club - Catonsville, Padonia Park Club - Cockeysville, Crofton Swim & Tennis Club, Forest Hill Swim and Tennis Club - Ellicott City, North Saint John's Swim Club - Ellicott City, Frederick Area Divers, Waugh Chapel Swim Club - Gambrills, West Howard Swim Club - Mt. Airy, St. Andrews Swim and Tennis Club - Severna Park and Severn River Swim Club - Severna Park.
The meet began with sunny skies and a stirring solo rendition of our National Anthem at 8:15 a.m. and was followed by the first group of divers, the 8&Under girls division. Three Howard County pools were represented — Forest Hill, North St. John's and West Howard — and their divers were ready to perform. After the splashes had settled, Howard County divers came away with four first place finishes: West Howard's Avery Powers (8&UG), Forest Hill's Tyler Auer (8&UB), West Howard's Zyler Powers (11/12B), and West Howard's Moe Reese (13/14B); two second place finishes: Forest Hill's Jeff Brunner (11/12B) and Mark Brunner (13/14B); and three third place finishes: North St. John's Haley Kampert (9/10G), Peyton Fuller (13/14G) and Cooper Watts (13/14B). The day concluded at 3:45 p.m. with the final awards for the 15-18 Boys division.
