Metro Maple Leafs
The Metro Maple Leafs U-18AA travel hockey team won the Tier II Maryland State Championship March 9-10, sweeping a best-of-three series against the Howard Huskies at Kettler Ice Arena in Arlington, Va. The Maple Leaf team is made up of senior, junior and sophomore players, primarily from Howard and Anne Arundel counties.
The Maple Leafs started the weekend strong on Friday night, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and cruising to a 6-3 victory over the stunned Huskies.
On Saturday, the Maple Leafs trailed, 2-1, with less than a minute left, when they pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. As time ticked away, Jon Beyerlein scored the game-tying goal with 2.9 seconds left on the clock.
After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a five-player shootout. After four shooters for each side had gone, it was 1-1 in the shootout, with Nick Price scoring for Metro. After Metro goalie Jonathan Hudson stopped yet another shot (giving him 41 saves in the game and shootout), it came down to Wilde Lake senior Andrew Amick. He did not disappoint, burying the goal in the back of the Huskies' net for the 3-2 victory, and a two-game sweep.
In addition to Hudson and Amick, other Howard County residents on the Maple Leafs include Hunter Penrod and Long Reach seniors Jeff Dudley, Jansen Earle and Jarek Milauskas.
Metro now advances to the Tier II U-18AA National Championships in Lansing, Mich. March 28–April 1. The majority of the players were members of the Metro Maple Leafs U-16AA team that advanced to nationals last year and made it to the national semifinals.
