Rec sports: Local basketball teams complete strong winter seasons

Basketball

The WHC Travel 7th Grade Force Boys A Team completed a great 2012-2013 season.

The team won the Columbia Ravens 7th Grade Travel League. They also won the regular season of the Pikesville Travel League and were runner-up in the Friday Night Middle School League. The team finished with a record of 34-6.

The team captains were Dylin Borden, Jayelen Gray and Brendan McKenna. The team was coached by B.J. Borden and Rob Boswell.

The Freedom 8th Grade Boys defeated Central Carroll to win the Carroll County League playoffs. Freedom and Central Carroll were regular season co-champions, both finishing 9-2 and splitting head-to-head during the season. Freedom defeated Central Carroll in the semifinals of the double elimination tournament, 46-18, and then again in the championship, 55-31. All players scored, and Zach Tucker led all scorers with 15 points. Both Adam Rolfes and Owen Gams scored 12 points and Scott Murri had 11. Justin Brookhart and Zach Lyons dominated the boards. Freedom finished 4-0 in the postseason tournament, averaging 55 points per game while allowing only 25.

Swimming

Three Columbia Clippers placed first in several events at this year's Maryland State Championships, held in Annapolis March 7-10. Taye Baldinazzo won the Boys 13–14 500 and 1650 Freestyle events. Greg Costello won the Boys 11–12 50 Fly and 100 Fly, and Morgan Liberto won the Girls 11-12 200 Fly.

In all, nine Clippers achieved top ten finishes during this year's championships.

11-12 Girls: Morgan Liberto (1. 200 Fly; 2. 100 Fly; 3. 50 Fly, 200 Back; 5. 100 Back, 400 IM; 7. 200 IM); Kayla May (4. 100 Back; 6. 50 Back; 8. 200 Back).

13-14 Girls: Kaleigh Hanson (5. 200 Back, 200 Free; 6. 100 Back; 10. 200 IM).

15-and-up Women: Peyton Walker (9. 1650 Free).

11-12 Boys: Greg Costello (1. 50 Fly, 100 Fly; 2. 50 Free, 200 Fly; 3. 200 IM, 400 IM; 5. 50 Back, 200 Back).

13-14 Boys: Taye Baldinazzo (1. 500 Free, 1650 Free; 2. 200 Free, 1000 Free; 3. 200 Back; 4. 200 IM, 400IM; 5. 100 Back); Cole May (2. 100 Fly, 200 Fly; 6. 100 Back; 9. 200 Back).

15-and-up Men: Alexander Gilese (5. 1650 Free; 6. 500 Free); Noah Pritchard (6. 200 Fly, 1000 Free; 8. 400 IM, 1650 Free).

Fourteen Columbia Clippers qualified to compete in the USA Swimming Eastern Zone Southern Region Sectional Swim Championship in Christiansburg, Va., March 21–24. They will be competing against other swimmers from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. who achieved a very difficult time to qualify.

The following Clippers will compete in this year's sectionals:

Bizu Baldinazzo, Taye Baldinazzo, Theresa Cotter, Alexander Gliese, Ila Jackson, Joe Kogan, David Lazris, Cole May, Kelly McGillicuddy, Noah Pritchard, Victoria Radcliffe, Jack Saunderson, Joel Stenoien and Peyton Walker.

Gymnastics

The Top Flight Gymnastics (Columbia) Boys Compulsory Teams competed at the Maryland Men's State Championship meet at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex on March 10. The Level 4 Team placed fourth overall, and the Level 5 Team was fifth.

Soccer

The Thunder Soccer Club's U14 Siafu finished as finalists at the Annandale Premier Cup this past weekend. After a dominating performance in the final, the team lost in the seventh round of penalty kicks. Team members include Jade Wilkins, Annie Hudec, Sophia Harrison, Yulie Argueta, Ashley Ensor, Victoria Hall, Francesca Venegas, Katie Pollack, Dana Reed, Brianna Starr, Alessandra Gargano, Elaina Ertel, Tori Scheidt, Sydney McNamara, Tara Reibau, Taryn Stewart, Jessica Braun, Alex VanGraafeiland and Cameryn Burke.

Volleyball

The Columbia Volleyball Club 16U Thunder won the gold medal at the Velocity 15/16 Mixed Invitational Tournament in Lansdowne on March 17. They finished first in competitive pool play over Metro American 16 Central, Velocity 16-2 and Delaware Juniors 16-3 Aftershock, earning a spot in the gold playoff bracket. The team then defeated two Metro American Volleyball Clubs, both in three sets, 16 South in the semifinals and 16 North in the championship to take the gold. The Thunder players are Rebecca Chamblee (Wilde Lake High), Rachel Dubbs (Marriotts Ridge High), Alyssa Glenn (Arundel High), Taylor Good (Centennial High), Essence Holtzclaw (Arundel High), Madison Lim (Atholton High), Karin Schleimer (Linganore High), Katherine Sudbrook (Howard High) and Taylor Swenski (Mount de Sales Academy).

Running

The Howard County Striders welcomed 115 runners, most wearing some green, who came out on St. Patrick's Day for the Striders' weekly series race at Swansfield Elementary on March 17. The 5k race served as graduation for the Hibernation to 5k program. Mark Eagles and Anna Hogue were the one-mile winners, while Keith Levasseur and Cindy Perkins paced the 5k finishers.
