The Columbia Ravens 7th grade girls basketball team participated in the Maryland Flames Team Dedication Holiday Tournament's 8th grade division and ended up finishing in second place.
The team opened the tournament with a 26-24 victory over the South River Shooters and later beat the DMV Ballers, 34-22, before losing to the CMA Black, 39-27, in the final. The team plays in the Carroll County and Arbutus Leagues during the regular season.
Team members include Maya Allmond, Courtney Furr, Madeline Winters, Sydney Bender, Peighton Stone, Claire Priestley, Cecelia Bartley, Katie Cardea and Madison Eich. The team is coached by Jim Cardea and Ryan Bartley.
Over winter break, the Soccer Association of Columbia's boys U17 premiere team traveled to Orlando, Fla., to participate in the Disney Soccer Showcase, which features club teams from across the nation.
The SAC BU17 squad won its first game, 2-1, against the Colorado Storm and tied its second game against Cajun Fury of Louisiana. Then, in the decisive third game that afforded the winner a championship shot, SAC earned a 4-2 victory over the Albion Hurricanes from Houston, TX.
The team ended up losing, 4-2, in the finals against Atlanta Fire United, but did win the second half, 2-1.
The team is made up of mostly high school juniors, many of who attend Howard County schools. The county players are Atholton's Jack Jacobs, Centennial's Jack Brown, Heston Priestley and Garrett Scheetz, Marriotts Ridge's Khalil Anderson, Jeff Kammerer and Amir Najib, River Hill's Zach Riso and Jake Turney, along with Wilde Lake's Zach Smythe and Brian Dubois. River Hill high school coach Matt Shagogue serves as coach for the team.
Over the course of the tournament, Priestley and Turney scored three goals each. Kammerer, Najib and Peter Gagnon found the net once apiece.
The Columbia Volleyball Club Comets (18U) placed second out of 12 teams from across Maryland and Virginia in the MVSA Open tournament Jan. 6. The team finished first in competitive pool play over Charles County Liberty, Northern Virginia Premier and MVSA Inferno to earn a spot in the gold-level playoff bracket.
The CVS Comets then defeated Maryland Juniors Elite in two sets before falling to Virginia Juniors in the championship match.
Members of the team are Allie Cable (Oakland Mills High), Lexi White-Torruellas (Centennial), Marina Loayza (Hammond), Ravyn Richardson (Mt.
