Oakland Mills defeated home-standing Frederick, 1-0, in a hard-fought battle at Cadet field.
The game was even at half, although both teams had opportunities. After the half, however, the Scorpions picked up the momentum.
Oakland Mills pressured the Frederick defense with intense circle play. Finally, with 2:30 left on the clock, Meg Minarcin found Jordan Kerr who buried the ball to put the Scorpions on the scoreboard. It was the only goal needed to start their season 1-0.
"The defense played great and the midfield really stepped it up," said Oakland Mills coach Nikki Trunzo.
Oakland Mills has a week off until they see Marriotts Ridge in the first in-county game.
