After a crushing loss on Friday, Marriotts Ridge rebounded Tuesday with an overtime win against River Hill 2-1.
Just a little over a minute into the overtime period, Marriotts Ridge was awarded a corner and took advantage. Senior Nicole Leaf put the ball past Lia Valdesuso (3 saves) to end the game.
Leaf was on the overtime squad as a defender, moving up offensively for the corner.
“It was the highest level of play we could have done on both sides. I thought we were hustling to the ball when we needed to; we were making the right passes,” Leaf said. “We’d have these moments where we’d panic and we’d lose it, but we got it back when it counted.”
The play took its turn in each end of the field. Both teams had opportunities. River Hill got on the board first when Sarah Rusenko found Angie Arensmeier with five minutes left in the first half.
The Mustangs seemed to deflate a little after the River Hill goal. Halfway through the second half, Mustangs’ coach Stacie Gado called a time out. The team came out reenergized and, at the ten minute mark, Marriotts Ridge evened up the score.
Morgan Jones, parked in front of Valdesuso, passed to Jenna Kerr who buried the ball. “After you score you can’t let down, there’s no time to celebrate,” Gado said. “We showed the intensity to keep pressuring the ball.”
There was no let up. The game went into overtime and, after a couple of fouls, River Hill found itself on the defensive side of a corner unable to clear the ball.
Despite the disappointment of the loss, the Hawks were pleased with their play.
“I think we played well. I give major props to their goalie [Sophia Hamilton, 9 saves],” River Hill coach Shelly Chamness said. “We had a 2 v 1 and she shut us down. I think it was a great game, our passing was good, we got to the ball quickly, everyone did their job.”

Victory is sweet.
It’s even sweeter when it breaks a 13-game county losing streak.
Oakland Mills knocked off Centennial Tuesday afternoon, 3-2, to win their first county game since beating Hammond during the middle of last season. The Scorpions did defeat Frederick earlier this year.
