Marine Lance Cpl. Eugene "Gene" C. Mills III, our West Laurel neighbor who was killed in combat on June 22 in Afghanistan, was honored and celebrated during Laurel's Fourth of July festivities and fireworks on July 7. The Mills family was present as Mayor Craig Moe dedicated the day to Gene. The annual fireworks display was something that Gene and his family loved. As "Little Gene," he was loved more than one can say by his mom, dad and brother and his large extended family and all their friends. As a Marine, he was a courageous leader of his men, a patriot and a hero who was honored with the Purple Heart posthumously. Gene was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on July 11.

St. Mary of the Mills is holding a used media sale. They are selling donated hardback books, paperback books, DVDs and VHS tapes as a fundraiser for St. Mary of the Mills School. I went to this fundraiser last year and was astonished by the amount of items for sale. Books were everywhere! The room was overflowing with books and other media items. Hardback books and DVDs are $1. Paperback books and VHS are only 25 cents.
The media items will be sold in the lower level of the church, which is located at 114 St. Mary's Place, right off Montgomery Street. The sale is on Thursday, July 26 and Friday, July 27 from noon to 7 p.m.; Saturday, July 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Sunday, July 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you would like to donate used books and other media items, bring them to the lower level of the church July 22 through 25 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call Val Makarsky at 301-498-1433, Ext. 557.
Our West Laurel community mourns the loss of a well-known friend and neighbor, Glenn Mills. He died June 30 in a tragic motor vehicle accident after an apparent heart attack. Our sympathy goes to his wife, Debbie, daughter Amanda Mills Hishmeh, son-in-law Nadol Hishmeh and two very-loved grandsons, Austin and Mason. Glenn grew up in West Laurel and raised his family here. He graduated from Laurel High in 1973. Glenn was devoted to his family and was truly known as someone his friends and neighbors could count on. He will be sincerely missed.
The West Laurel Wahoos have been competing all summer and having the time of their lives. Each swimmer has achieved more skills, increased times and made everlasting friendships. Head coaches Matt Harris and Dave Floyd, with assistant coaches Deb Hoover and Louanne Myers, are more than proud of their Wahoos this 2012 season.
