The Laurel High School Poms team — last year's Mid-Atlantic Pom and Dance Association's state champion — have qualified to attend the National Dance Team Competition in Orlando.
The competition, held Feb. 2-3 at Walt Disney World Resort, is broadcast on ESPN2.
The team is not funded in any way by the county, said LaToya Tapscott, the team's head coach, and everything its members need to compete — costumes, travel expenses, etc. — is paid for through fundraising, sponsorships and donations. There are 19 girls on the team, and Tapscott said it would cost approximately $1,800 per student to attend the competition. The team is asking for community sponsorships and donations.
