Michael McLaughlin has dropped out of the District 1 Board of Education race inPrince George's County.
Citing personal reasons, McLaughlin announced the suspension of his campaign Friday, leaving only David Murray, of Bowie, and Zabrina Epps, of Laurel, vying for the District 1 seat held by Rosalind Johnson, who is not seeking re-election.
McLaughlin's name will still appear on the April 3 primary ballot, but he is no longer actively campaigning and urged his supporters to instead vote for Epps.
"I am grateful for the support I've received from District 1 residents, and hope that they will extend that same support to Zabrina Epps," McLaughlin said in a release.
He declined to immediately comment further.
A long-time advocate for students' needs, McLaughlin, 58, of Laurel, previously ran for the board in 2010, but did not progress beyond the primary.
In both campaigns, he had stressed collaboration and communication between board members and the public as necessary to improve the school system.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
