As the carefree days of summer begin to dwindle, don't forget to take advantage of those last few opportunities presenting themselves before we dive headfirst into another year of school and athletic events.
The West Arundel Swim Club offers a reprieve from school shopping and last-minute summer assignments, with a Kid's Movie Night on Thursday, Aug. 16. Gates open for moviegoers at 8 p.m. Enjoy meeting friends at the pool to splash around for awhile, followed by some popcorn and snow cones as you settle in for the viewing of"Cars 2" at dusk. Members and their guests, ages 10 and under, may join the fun for only $3 per person.
On Friday night, Aug 17, the West Arundel Swim Club offers a Super Nacho Youth Night for ages 11 to 17. Members and guests enjoy fun in the pool, playing water basketball and time on the diving boards and slide along with the Super Nacho bar and a soda for only $5 per member and $7 per guest. On Saturday night, Aug. 18, it is the adults' turn as they take over the pool from 6 to 10:30 p.m. to enjoy a shish kebab dinner followed by a movie. Take your date out for a fun evening of volleyball, water volleyball, dinner and a movie. Members and guests may enjoy the evening for $10 per person. Tickets must be purchased by close of business Friday, Aug. 17. Movie to be determined.
During the following week, the West Arundel Swim Club offers a special Youth Movie Night on Thursday, Aug. 23 for ages 11 to 17. Gates open for moviegoers at 8 p.m. Enjoy meeting friends at the pool for a last-chance gathering before school begins and enjoy some popcorn and snow cones as you settle in for a movie (to be determined) at dusk. The pool will also hold a Back-to-School Cookout Potluck on Sunday, Aug. 26 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Enjoy the last day before the beginning of the new school year talking with friends about your exciting new adventures and making plans for the fall. The pool provides hamburgers and hot dogs. Please remember to bring a salad, side or dessert to share. The cost is $4 per member and $6 per guest.
The local schools excitedly prepare over the next two weeks for our students' arrival. Some important dates to remember include the Meet-and-Greet Ice Cream Socials at the elementary schools on Thursday, Aug. 23. Brock Bridge Elementary holds its event from 2 to 3 p.m. and Maryland City Elementary hosts its social from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Meade Middle School offers its new student orientation on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. and Meade High School offers a new student orientation on Friday, Aug. 24 from 9 to10:30 a.m.
The first day of school for all elementary school students, sixth-graders and ninth-graders begins on Monday, Aug. 27. All other students report for their first day on Tuesday, Aug. 28. Let's have a great year for all of our students and show our support by volunteering at the school and joining the school PTA at the beginning of the school year – anyone can join, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors.
Finally, the Maryland City Recreation Council wants to remind everyone that football, cheerleading and soccer are getting into full swing. County football and cheerleading practices have already begun and travel soccer and flag football practices will begin sometime next week. Soccer practice for ages 7 and under will start after Labor Day weekend with a meet-the-coaches night. There are still a few spots left on the 8- to 10-year-old tackle football team, the flag football teams, the cheerleading squads, a few travel soccer teams and the 3/4-, 5/6- and 7-year-old soccer teams. Maryland City Recreation Council will also offer a fresh/soph tackle football team this year for any high school freshmen or sophomores who are not playing football in high school.
