Spring beckons just around the corner. The signs call out to us – children playing soccer on the school fields, the occupation of the baseball mound and batter's box by dreamy baseball players and warmer temperatures slowly creeping in to our days. The clocks moved forward last weekend, so we even have a few more hours of sunlight to enjoy each evening. Spending time outdoors with the family brings joy to everyone. It makes the kids squeal as they play and provides adults with some much-needed sunlight, which always puts people in a mood to be just a little happier.

Spring soccer practice for the Maryland City Recreation Council Mustangs began last week for the travel teams and the Mustangs look forward to another successful season. In the fall, three teams won county championships: the U-10 boys coached by Terry Lindsay, the U-11 boys coached by Camillo Ramirez and Susan Gasbarro; and the U-14 boys coached by Eris Murray. Members of each team received special division champion trophies from the county during their banquet in January. The U-10 boys included Joseph Henderson, Brayan Rodezno, Eric Alexander, Rafael Echeverria, Ian Fabregas, Baboucarr Jatta, Jahlil Crawford, Samuel Ejindu and Ian Middleton.  The U-11 team included Marcus Ragsdale, Henry Zebere, Malick Sanyang, Oumarr Bah, Alex Ramirez, Dahe Gibbs, Cristian Chavarria, Sarim Malik, Joseph Gasbarro, Kelly Lamisere and Shawn Souverin. Finally, the U-14 team included Shaun Joyner, Jordan Marroquin, Joseph Pacheco, Bilal Akbar, Evan Marx, Abdul-Halim Goins, Eric Alford, Austin Colohan, Ruben Cortes, Christopher Marx, Seanerik Murray, Byron Ruiz, Peedy Terry, Markel Malcolm, Chauncey Upsher, Andrew Spitza, Derick Revels, Tosin Ayokunle, Tayvon Lassiter and Diego Ruiz. Congratulations to all players and good luck as your new season begins this weekend.

The Maryland City Recreation Council Mini-Kicks soccer and baseball, softball and T-ball begin practices soon.  If you have not yet registered, please download a registration form at http://www.mcrcsoccer.venitsports.com and send it in immediately to secure a spot on one of the teams. If you have any questions, please contact my husband, John Venit, at dpws@aol.com or 301-725-7711.

Congratulations also go out to the Maryland City Recreation Council basketball teams on a great winter season. The U-13 boys, coached by Carlos Hill, captured their county division title. The team included Kahlil Cunanan, Taevon Mason, Andre White, Jerrell Allgood, Joshua Philip Santos, Jordan King, Ahman Bowman, Logan DeLizio and Desmond Pettross. The basketball teams enjoyed the season so much that five teams are returning to play this weekend as part of the Anne Arundel County spring program. Good luck!
