Kimberly Kepnes, co-owner of ScoopAhhDeeDoo, laughs as she says that the opening of her ice cream shop was “completely by accident.”
That “accident” is now celebrating its second summer season as an addition to the Little French Market Cafe in Historic Ellicott City.
“With the cafe, we had a growing need to expand our offerings,” Kepnes says.
Four years ago, Kepnes and two of her girlfriends opened the Little French Market Cafe to enhance their favorite courtyard off Ellicott City’s bustling Main Street.
“We were three dumb girls who decided to open a coffee shop,” Kepnes says. “We love our courtyard. We have a little gem.”
In hopes of bringing more people to their courtyard oasis, ScoopAhhDeeDoo was born and is open seasonally from April Fool’s Day to Halloween.
Scoops in 22 flavors -- both classics and unique concoctions of hard ice cream and sorbet -- are sold from a window station adjacent outdoor seating and a small garden. ScoopAhhDeeDoo’s ice cream, including flavors like Berger cookie, pistachio, salty caramel and dark chocolate peppermint, are made by Baltimore-based Taharka Bros. ice cream.
Kepnes says that ScoopAhhDeeDoo keeps the same flavors in stock, because it’s those flavors that bring customers back for more. The store already has earned a following of regulars, some of whom are loyal to one flavor while others like to mix things up. (Think toasted coconut paired with Key lime pie.)
“The setting is great for gathering,” Kepnes says. “And without food, a gathering is short-lived.”
A single scoop costs $2.50. Pints to-go cost $6.50. Milkshakes and nonfat frozen yogurt also are available.
