Howard magazine launched its first-ever Howard County’s Favorite Pet contest this spring. More than 1,600 votes were cast. From a field of 62 dogs and cats, Boss, a Yorkie Poo, was named top dog.
Boss is a 2-year-old Yorkie Poo (Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle mix). His daily schedule is a busy one -- first playing, then playing some more.
During walks, he takes every opportunity to chase squirrels and birds. He also enjoys playing “Wiggle Worm,” a game he invented in which he wiggles around on his back while being tickled by his doting owners, Phyllis Smith and Stephen Mitchell.
“Boss is an absolute joy in our lives,” says Smith. “He is very bright, communicative and extremely playful.”
Smith and Mitchell say Boss has not only brightened their lives, but caused them to lead a healthier lifestyle from all the walks and playtime he requires.
“I have to tell you, we never expected the level of attention that a smart pet like Boss requires,” Smith says, adding that Boss insists on taking each and every one of his many toys out of their storage bin every day.
His most prized possession, however, is a blanket he’s had since he was a puppy. It comes in handy for games of tug of war, the occasional desire to shake it about wildly, and as a sleeping companion.
Cooked carrot and apple slices added to his kibble are among his favorite mealtime feasts.
Little-known fact: Boss has been known to hide his “cookie” treats all over the house to be retrieved later for snacking when the notion suits him.
