Howard girls lacrosse nets first win over Centennial, 13-10

It wasn’t easy, and it’s taken over a quarter century, but Howard notched its first win over Centennial in girls lacrosse on April 9. The score of the game was 13-10.

The closing minutes were reminiscent of last year’s contest, said Howard coach Alleesha Davidson.

“It was funny. We got cards at the end (last year) and we were down by one and we ended up chasing them for two minutes at the end” of the game, Davidson said. “When it happened again, I thought, ‘Oh, no!’ ”

Howard lost last year’s contest by a goal.

Tuesday, leading by three with under five minutes to play, the Lions picked up two yellow cards requiring them to play two players down.

But Howard held steady.

“That’s where my inexperienced players show,” said Centennial coach Rachel Lenzo. “They’ve been taught what to do in those situations but they weren’t able to capitalize. …We were kind of forcing the shots at the end just to get a shot.”

“It was our defense,” said Davidson. “Down by two players, and Centennial didn’t score. That’s a huge momentum shift at that point.”

Howard goalkeeper Lauren Ferraro made eight saves to anchor the Lions’ defense. With Centennial threatening to score, Howard defender Kati Maggio made a key interception late in the game.

Lenzo said her team needs the experience it gained against Howard.

“We’ve won big and lost big. We need those situations where we have to dig deep and feel it in our guts and put the win out,” she said.
