Letter: Since when is child-rearing sole purpose of marriage, gay or not?

Question 6 has thankfully passed, but I would like to respond to the letter written by Lynda Kouroupis ("Allowing same-sex marriage destroys 'treasured institution'," Nov. 1. In her letter, Ms. Kouroupis states all the benefits of marriage as related to child rearing by a heterosexual couple only.

I'm wondering, should a heterosexual couple unable to have children (past child-bearing age, sterilized, etc.) be unable to marry? Should, after a certain number of years of attempting unsuccessfully to have children, such a marriage would no longer be considered valid?

Question 6 did not win by anywhere close to an overwhelming margin. In fact despite huge advantages in monetary support, celebrity endorsements, and a media that was heavily and dishonestly biased against those who supported real marriage between one man and one woman, only, the margin was relatively small.

The conditions hightlight two facts. First, it takes an enormous amount of time and money to fool just enough people into accepting the myth that same-sex behavior is a normal of form of human sexual expression that's equal to heterosexual behavior, especially in marriage. Second, it shows how facts are so powerful that when proponents of real marriage finally aired them in ads, they were able to erase much of the lead that proponents of illegitimate marriage (between two people of the same sex) had.

Thus, proponents of real marriage shouldn't be discouraged. Rather, we can easily turn the tables on illegitimate marriage because we have the facts on our side and because we were able to close the gap separating our side from theirs in very short time. We need to do so, because, as they've done elsewhere, proponents of illegitimate marriage will seek to have homosexuality taught as normal and acceptable in schools and because homosexuality is partially due to social factors, gay marriage will serve to encourage it in people, who are prone to it.

A marriage license requires no procreation.
