In light of the recent tragedy that occurred with Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, I wanted to take a moment to say how grateful I am to live in a place like Columbia.

Growing up here it has always been commonplace to see interracial couples and have friends of many different racial backgrounds. For many, this is why they choose to return to Columbia after college and settle down here with their families. Rouse's vision of Columbia was built on the basis of having a diversity of culture and that sentiment continues to ring true some 30 years later.

I am saddened that the Sanford Police Department in Florida seems to condone racism and this type of hatefulness, but through this atrocity, it has reiterated to me how lucky we all are to live and grow in a place like Columbia.
