Sisters Ada and Jocelyn Truong, of Clarksville, both won first place in their age categories in the Howard County Bird Club's 2011 student art contest. Ada, 10, a fourth-grader at Centennial Lane Elementary School, drew an Overbird using pastels. Jocelyn, 11, a sixth-grader at Burleigh Manor Middle School, drew a Yellow Warbler, also in pastels. The two received backpacks with binoculars and field guides.
Other winners in the third and fourth grade category were Alan Wang (second place) and Richard Zhou (third place), both of Centennial Lane Elementary School; and honorable mentions: Mason Suess, of Pointers Run Elementary School; Emma Kraus, of Lisbon Elementary School; and Mann Wilkerson, of Lisbon Elementary School.
Other winners in the fifth and sixth grade category were Sarah Yang (second place), of Manor Woods Elementary School; Jasmine Garcia (third place), of Glenelg Country School; and honorable mentions: Christine Kwon, of Pointers Run Elementary School; Rachel Yu, of Mount View Elementary School; and Gianna Graziano, of Lisbon Elementary School.
Katherine Kanner, of Ellicott City, received a $1,000 Mike Harper Leadership Scholar award from the ConAgra Foods Foundation. She plans to attend Fairfield University in the fall.
Ben Tschirgi has been awarded a $7,000 scholarship by the Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City. He plans to attend Stevenson University and major in film/video and theater.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
