Laurel Police reported three instances of purses being snatched from women in the last few weeks.
In two instances, women were in parking lots when they their purses were taken. On Nov. 23, police said, a 41-year-old Laurel woman was entering her car in the morning in the 600 block of Washington Boulevard, near the intersection of Route 1 and Route 198, when a man approached her and grabbed her purse from her hands.
On Dec. 2, Laurel Police reported, a 42-year-old woman was loading groceries into her vehicle in the parking lot of Shoppers Food Warehouse, at Route 1 and Contee Road, when an unidentified person took her purse from the shopping cart and fled.
A third purse snatching occurred inside Giant Food at Laurel Shopping Center Dec. 4. A woman, 49, told police her purse was taken from her shopping cart.
"Purse snatchings are common at grocery stores," said Laurel City Spokesman James Collins.
Collins said it doesn't appear that the purse snatchings are related.
"It is a crime of opportunity," he said, "and often the victims are elderly."
