Jeffrey Wayne Malcolm, 55, of the 9600 block of Barrel House Road, is facing one count of robbery for the Howard County case, according to online court records.
Police say he attempted to rob the PNC Bank branch on the 15000 block of Old Frederick Road in Woodbine on Nov. 7, 2011. According to charging documents, a masked man carrying a black plastic bag entered the bank at 9:40 a.m., walked to the counter and demanded that a teller put money in the bag. The teller refused because he didn't believe the man had a weapon, police said.
The man left without getting any money, but that would not be the case with incidents in Carroll, Frederick and Prince George's counties. Police say those robberies were similar, involving a masked man with the same physical traits who made verbal demands but never showed or implied a weapon and who got away with money at a PNC branch in Laurel city on Oct. 28, a PNC branch in Sykesville on Jan. 17 and a SunTrust bank in Monrovia on both Jan. 25 and Feb. 4.
But a witness saw the man remove his mask and drive away following the Feb. 4 robbery. The vehicle the man was driving, police said, was registered to Malcolm's mother, a vehicle Malcolm had been driving on Jan. 20 when he was arrested after a traffic stop for allegedly possessing crack cocaine.
Malcolm was arrested on Feb. 8 in Odenton, according to Laurel Police. He is being held at the Howard County Detention Center in Jessup on $250,000 bail.
