Officials said they responded to the pond, located within an apartment complex in the 13000 block of Old Stagecoach Road, at approximately 8:45 p.m. Rescue officials said witnesses told them they saw a man, whom they believed to be a teenager, go underwater and never resurface.
County officials identified the man as Kalif Omar Richardson, 21 of District Heights.
Officials said a water rescue team from Laurel Volunteer Rescue Squad deployed a rescue boat and 11 rescuers into the water, which ranged from 2 to 5-feet deep. At 10:20 p.m., after an 80-minute search, one of the rescuers found Richardson, who was not breathing, and pulled him ashore, officials said.
Officials said paramedics performed CPR on the body en route to Laurel Regional Hospital, where Richardson was pronounced dead. Prince George's County Police said an autopsy was conducted this morning, and toxicology results will be available in six weeks.
Police said Wednesday afternoon that a Prince George's County homicide unit is investigating the drowning.
