Over the years, Halloween has evolved from a kid-centric holiday to a fun celebration for all ages. One popular activity in our area is the annual Mustang 5K Stampede and Scream and 1-mile Zombie Walk at Marriotts Ridge High School.

Everyone, from toddlers to teens to seniors, is welcome to participate. Get into the Halloween spirit with a costume, or not — the choice is yours. This year's event will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, regardless of the weather.

Trophies will be awarded to the males and females in first and second place, both overall and in each age category (under 11, 11-13, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over), and in the MRHS Faculty, Student, and Parent categories.

Additionally, the fastest 12-and-under finishers in the Zombie Walk will receive prizes. Those who dress up will have an opportunity to win costume prizes, and all who enter will have a chance at the post-race door prizes.

Registration costs $20 per person online or by mail, if postmarked by Monday, Oct. 22, and $25 at Pre-Race Packet-Pickup or Race Day Registration. The cost for families of four or more is $60, but this registration must take place through the mail by Oct. 22. Make checks payable to Marriotts Ridge Boosters Club and send with one registration form per participant to MRHS Boosters Club, Attn: Stampede 5K, 12100 Woodford Drive, Marriottsville, MD 21104.

The Boosters Club is not the only MRHS organization in the throes of fundraising; the Marriotts Ridge Music Foundation has also begun its winter citrus sale, offering boxes of juicy red grapefruit, Florida navel oranges, tangerines, and variety packs, in two-fifths and four-fifths bushel sizes.

Pricing and order forms are available at http://www.mrhsmusic.net/Fundraising/citrus-sales, and orders are due Friday, Oct. 26, for pickup at the school on Saturday, Nov. 17. Proceeds will help fund the music students' annual spring trip to a competition in Nashville.

The band students at West Friendship Elementary School have been hard at work, some learning an instrument for the first time, and some expanding upon their previous experience with new notes and songs. Teacher Amy Syversen would like to recognize the following Band Musicians of the Month for their positive attitudes and dedication: Jacob Coomber (alto saxophone), Madison Costigan (bass clarinet), Juliette LaVeck (flute), Alexandra Lindahl (flute), Joshua Morton (alto saxophone), Ethan Triska (clarinet), and Jessica Turner (alto saxophone). Great job!

The Glenelg United Methodist Church food pantry is celebrating its first anniversary this month. It began serving three families in 2011 and now provides grocery assistance to 19 families — 67 people, in all. Although the pantry shelves empty after each monthly opening, they always grow full again, thanks to the generosity of the congregation and many other community donors.

Food pantry representatives would like to give a shout out to three of their largest donors this past month — Glenelg High School student Nick Crabill, who organized a food drive at a GHS football game, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Clarksville, and the Weight Watchers Lose for Good Team, which is located in the Enchanted Forest Shopping Center in Ellicott City.

If you are in need of grocery assistance or would like to make a donation, call the church at 410-489-7260, or contact food pantry representatives at glenelgumcpantry@gmail.com. The church always needs of a variety of food and toiletry items, but this month, it has asked donors to focus on providing fruit.

The next pantry opening will take place this Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thursday, Oct. 25, marks the date for the next community feast at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2892 Route 97, in Glenwood. Come between 6 and 8 p.m. to enjoy this month's menu of Italian food, prepared and donated by Smokin' Hot Bar & Grille. Don't have time to sit down? Grab a carryout box and take your food to go!

The meal costs $9 per person or $30 maximum per family; children five and under dine for free. Proceeds will support Worldwide Shelters, a Glenwood-based nonprofit organization that not only provides short-term shelter to those in need, but also helps transition families to permanent housing (www.worldwideshelters.org).
