From the Times social column: "Mrs. Andrew Norton and daughter of Baltimore, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin B. Cromwell.
"Mr. John Penn, of Savage, was visitor here the past week.
"Mr. John E. Gaither who was critically ill last week, is much improved.
"Mr. George West was a recent visitor in the Monumental city."
Though no monumental error, that Baltimore moniker is "Monument" city. Today there are 80 plus monuments in the city, among them one dedicated to the Boy Scouts; to Baltimore Colts football legend Johnny Unitas; to Frederick Douglass, who when he was a slave, worked for a family in Baltimore; to the victims of the Holocaust; and to the 22,000 Poles, the majority of whom were military and police officers, executed by the NKVD (Soviet secret police, predecessor to the KGB) in 1940.
And there's a monument to Howard County's name sake, John Edgar Howard, which is, go figure, on Howard Street.

Seems the farmer preferred experience over youth and a farmhand whose oats were already sown.

"Cattle Fence — posts, bracers and all size gates, grain crimper, hammer mill, hay elevator. Sewell. Call noon or after dark."
It's spring, and both the farmer's tan and planting season have commenced. So if you wanted this cattle fencing you'd have to telephone the farmer on a lunch break, or after sunset, when it's just too dark to plow and plant any more.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
