Howard County honored volunteers on Oct. 26 in a ceremony that recognized the generosity and achievements of 16 individuals, six non-profit organizations and one local business. The annual event also included the announcement of Howard County's Volunteer of the Year and other special award recipients.
The honorees were Volunteer of the Year: Jacques Fein; Volunteer Youth of the Year: Rupini Shukla; Volunteer Non-Profit Organization of the Year: The Arc of Howard County's Team Embrace; Business of the Year: Brightworks Wealth Management; Community Builder Award: Laurel Conran and Lisa Chertok; and Patriot Award: Don Downer.
Sister Patricia A. Eck, Congregation Leader for the Sisters of Bon Secours of Paris since 2009 and chairwoman of Bon Secours Ministries, receive the Papal award, Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal on Nov. 20. This is the highest honor given to a member of a religious community by the Vatican.
Instituted by Pope Leo XIII in 1888, the honor is bestowed upon lay people and clergy who have provided distinguished service to the Roman Catholic Church. Sr. Eck will receive the medal at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore.
Sr. Eck earned a master's degree in health administration from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University, a master's degree in nursing from Catholic University of America, and a bachelor's degree in nursing from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Carol A. Beatty, Executive Director of The Arc of Howard County, and the Community Action Council of Howard County are the recipients of the 2011 Human Rights Award, given by the Howard County Human Rights Commission. The Human Rights Commission Award honors individuals, past and present, and community organizations who contributed to human and civil rights in Howard County. The purpose of the award is to recognize exemplary citizenship, dedicated leadership and outstanding achievement in eliminating or eradicating discrimination, while advancing human rights for all residents of Howard County.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
