December will be a big month for the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Company.
On Dec. 8, starting at 11 a.m., the second annual Lisbon Horse Parade will start at the future site of the new Lisbon Fire Station at the corner of Route 144 and Woodbine Road.
The parade will proceed East on Route 144, cut through the lot at Myers Mini Barn, turn left on South Alley, through the Lisbon Elementary School parking lot to the Lisbon United Methodist Church driveway and back to where it started.
There will be pony rides at Myers Mini Barn. The fire department will collect nonperishable food items for the Carroll and Howard County Food Banks. Monetary donations will go to the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Company Building Fund.
There will also be a Fried Chicken and Ham Dinner following the horse parade from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the fire hall. The cost is $12 for adults and $8 for children over the age of 5.
On Dec. 9, the department will hold its Pancake Breakfast from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. The menu will include pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, chipped beef gravy, hot apples and beverages.
Just a point of interest to all of us who live in the Woodbine area, the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department will not be getting any financial support to build the new fire station. It will be built with fundraising and private donations through a capital campaign.
For many of us, it is the closest fire station we have in the case of a real emergency. The growth in housing has been astronomical in the past 30 years since I moved here. We really need a start-of-the-art, large fire station to protect our property and help us at times of medical emergencies.
Please think about giving a monetary donation to this worthwhile cause that can benefit each of us when we least expect it.
St. Andrew's Episcopal Church will hold ts Breakfast with St. Nicholas on Dec. 8 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the church hall. Seasonal gifts will be for sale, as well as gifts for children to purchase and wrap. The cost of the breakfast will be $7 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 10.
The church also requests a donation of a canned food to be donated to the Glenwood United Methodist Church Food Pantry. The church is at 2892 Route 97 in Glenwood. To reserve tickets or for more information, email email@example.com.
The Men's Club of St. Michael's Catholic Church will hold its annual Pancake Breakfast on Dec. 1 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Santa Claus will be at the breakfast for pictures with the children and also sleigh rides (weather permitting).
The all-you-can-eat menu will include pancakes, eggs, home fries, sausage and beverages. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 10 and under. Infants are free.
The church is also collecting new, unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots. The church is on St. Michael's Road off Route 144, just east of Mt. Airy.
The Mt. Zion and Glenelg United Methodist Churches are joining forces to produce musical Christmas selections from Handel's "Messiah." This performance will include over 50 choir members with solos. The performance will be held on Dec. 15 at 5 p.m. at Glenelg and Dec. 16 at 5 p.m. at Mt. Zion. A free will offering is suggestedCopyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
