I can't believe that summer is over and fall is upon us. It won't be long before we're raking leaves and wondering what to do with them.

The Howard County Master Gardeners will be happy to pick up your leaves from your house as part of their "Rake and Take" program. The Master Gardeners will tell you that leaves are one of the ingredients for making "black gold," also known as compost.

If you would like to join the program, send an email to phooker9440@gmail.com. Include your address, phone number and a note that you would like to participate in the program. This program is sponsored by the University of Maryland Extension Howard County Master Gardeners.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman recently traded places with Nora Crist of Clark's Elioak Farm in Ellicott City as part of the ninth annual Farm-City Celebration, which runs until Oct. 7. County Executive Ulman helped to run the Clark's farming operation of beef, swine, sheep, poultry and produce, as well as their petting farm.

Nora Crist got a taste of a typical day in the life of a county executive. The switch is meant to give each a taste of the challenges of running a farming operation and managing a county.

Ken Ulman will be welcoming cyclist, cancer survivor and advocate Lance Armstrong to Howard County for the third annual Half Full Triathlon, which benefits the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. Armstrong will be racing with other cancer survivors at the event on Oct. 7 at Centennial Park in Ellicott City.

This event is very close to the county executive's heart since his brother's battle with cancer. For more information about the event or to make a donation, go to http://www.ulmancancerfund.org.

St. Andrew's Parish will be hosting a Ladies Night of Shopping on Oct. 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be 15 vendors offering unique products, such as jewelry and clothing. Refreshments will also be served.

The event will take place in the church hall at 2892 Route 97 in Glenwood. For more information, call 240-372-8878.
