With temperatures soaring to an unexpected 80 degrees on April 8, West Friendship yards became a literal overnight sea of blooming daffodils.
Trumpet daffodils indeed, as the iconic floral herald of spring fairly shouted out to passers by.
West Friendship gardeners Ann and Wally Chaillou, Ken and Ellen Nibali and Corinne, and John Gorzo deserve a thank you for the riotous yellow splendor that their respective gardens gave to all of us.
When we were children in the 1950s my sisters and brothers always sang a little ditty while we soared on our swing set. "The red fox ran away. He ran far far away. His mother had no telephone. Had no telephone. So he was all alone."
Well, the red fox is not alone on Lakeway Drive. Becky Novotny and several neighbors have been enjoying the dining antics of a male and a female fox as they gather rodents, store the booty and plan a mighty feast for the babies in their den.
The foxes have been so evident that Novotny was able to capture them on film. Sunflower seeds seem to be the snack of choice for this duo. Another sure sign of spring in our little borough.
"Fun, friends, food, auction and prizes." That's the description of the activities at the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church benefit on May 4, 7 to 10 p.m. With a come on like that who can resist? Tickets for the evening are $30 per person.
The gala is funding the international Honduras outreach program as well as the local Rainbow Camp, which assists Baltimore City children in need through a program of education and music ministry.
Committee organizer Cathy Ruley said tickets will be available at the door and also may be purchased in advance. Finger foods, cash bar and an evening sure to be loads of fun. Questions about the event? Call 410-489-4035. St. Andrew's is at 2892 Route 97, in Glenwood.

Come out to the Howard County Fairgrounds on Sunday, April 28, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., to view some fabulous equestrian action.
The MWHA, which was formerly known as the Maryland Western Horse Association but due to incorporation issues must now use just MWHA, will host another show which is family friendly from mane to stirrup.
Association member Becky Novotny wishes more area folks were aware of all the Western and English horse riding events that are available for local spectators. The show begins in the morning and continues through the afternoon with barrel events, speed classes, Western and English classes, cake walk, jumping events, pony ring sessions, young toddlers being led by their parents during lead line competitions and more.
All this horsing around takes place at the fairgrounds, where there is plenty of free parking. Novotny notes that food is available and the event is great for spectators of all ages.
Summer horse shows will also be held at the fairgrounds on May 19, June 2 and 16, July 14 and 28, and Aug.11. For any information, call 443-848-1926 or email Becky at firstname.lastname@example.org.
