Dennis Whittaker has never steered me wrong. In 38 years of West Friendship gardening, nary a season has passed that I have not filled up the garden cart with items from Whittaker's Flowers on Route 144.

In recent years, Whittaker has narrowed the hours of operation at his garden center, but each spring local gardeners revel in the knowledge that weekend offerings are ready and waiting. The spring weekend sale begins on April 19 and continues until June 1.

Garden goodies, lush market packs, perennials, herbs and shrubs are available Fridays, noon to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. According to Whittaker, it's nothing short of a "Flowerama".

Sports and altruism are the name of the game for two local high school baseball teams. Glenelg and Reservoir high schools are participating in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Games, which raises funds for the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center at Howard County General Hospital.
