Marriottsville/Sykesville/Woodstock: Cream-of-the-crop musicians tapped at Marriotts Ridge

At Marriotts Ridge High School, many musicians have been selected for Maryland All State Ensembles. Students must audition for these groups, and then judges pick the cream of the crop from across the state.

Junior ensembles encompass 7th-9th grades, and senior ensembles span 10th-12th grades. Congratulations to the following individuals:

Additionally, some students were nominated for and accepted into the prestigious All Eastern ensembles, which pull kids from Maine to the District of Columbia and everywhere in between. Congratulations to Joshua Altenburg for making the All Eastern Mixed Chorus, and to Elizabeth Malachevsky and Mimi Rinaldi for making the All Eastern Treble Chorus!

Some of these Marriotts Ridge musicians will perform in the 2012 Holiday Jazz Cabaret scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m., in the Marriotts Ridge Commons. Come enjoy the relaxing, coffeehouse atmosphere as the madrigals, women's ensemble, and big band jazz group offer "smooth sounds of the season." Admission costs $10 and includes coffee, hot cocoa and finger foods.

The musicians at Mt. View Middle School are also hard at work preparing for their upcoming winter concerts. These groups garner awards every year, and their concerts are free.

The band will perform on Monday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m., and the orchestra will perform on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. Both concerts will take place across the street from Mt. View, in the Marriotts Ridge High School auditorium.

Leapin' lizards! Chapelgate Theatrics is presenting the beloved family musical, "Annie," for the holidays. Based upon the "Little Orphan Annie" comic strip, the play follows the spunky title character as she escapes from a cruel orphanage director and, after a series of adventures in 1930s New York City, finds a happy new home and family.

Performances are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 14, at 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 16, at 3 p.m.

The living nativity at St. James United Methodist has become a community tradition. Bring the family out on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m., to see the Christmas story narrated and acted out on the front lawn of the church, 12470 Old Frederick Road (Route 99), in Marriottsville. Make sure to stay for some cookies and hot cocoa.
