The Howard County Fair ends this Saturday, and school begins in a few short weeks. If you are looking for a way to entertain your kiddos during the interim, consider bringing the whole family to the Amazing Baby and Child Expo on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Main Street in Sykesville.
The event is geared to family members of all ages — expectant and experienced parents, grandparents, babies, children, tweens and teens — as well as child care providers.
The younger set will have an opportunity to enjoy carnival games and rides, inflatables, face painters and balloon artists, magicians, and more, while mom and dad peruse the educational displays and safety demonstrations.
Exhibitors and craft vendors will create a unique shopping experience filled with relevant products and services, and the majority of the proceeds will benefit Caring Communities Inc. (www.caringcommunities.org), an Eldersburg-based nonprofit that offers disability-related training and events in the mid-Atlantic region.

The Sykesville Concerts in the Park series is winding down, with only two more performances remaining.
This Friday, Aug. 10, oldies group Pet Rock will take the stage at Millard Cooper Park with a free concert from 7 to 9 p.m.
Next week, on Friday, Aug. 17, D.L. "Pigeon" McCauley will present a tribute to the armed forces. This final concert, which also runs 7-9 p.m., is a fundraiser for the new Sykesville military memorial.
The park address is 7283 Cooper Drive, and parking is free across the street at Sykesville Middle School. The venue includes a snack bar and a lighted playground.
Last month, the Glenelg United Methodist Church food pantry provided grocery assistance to a rapidly growing number of families and, as a result, depleted its supply of food, toiletries, and cleaning products.
The church seeks community assistance in restocking its shelves before the pantry opens again on Aug. 18. If you find a good sale while out shopping, please consider picking up a few extra items to donate.
The church keeps a collection bin in the narthex, at 13900 Burntwoods Road. For larger donations, call the church at 410-489-7260, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
School is just around the corner, and West Friendship Elementary School will offer an opportunity to meet with Principal Carol Hahn next week. Students and their families may come out for a "Coffee and Conversation" social on Thursday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m. To learn more, call the school office at 410-313-5512.
Students participating in fall sports at Marriotts Ridge High School must turn in their paperwork Friday, Aug. 10, 4-6 p.m., in the school cafeteria.
The requisite paperwork includes a current physical examination (dated after April 1, 2012), an athletic participation form, a copy of the student's birth certificate, and proof of residency (such as a current utility bill). School-related forms are available online at marriottsridge.net/sportsInfo.php.
Student athletes must also submit to concussion testing, which is offered at MRHS on Thursday, Aug. 9, and Friday, Aug., 10 at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. For more information, go to the school website or contact the child's coach.
This weekend, St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Catholic Church will host its 97th annual Woodstock Festival on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 3 to 7 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 12, from 1 to 5 p.m. The family-style fried chicken and ham dinner costs $13 for adults and $7 for children.
The church address is 10800 Old Court Road, in Woodstock. Questions? Call 410-461-5267.
The Howard County Conservancy also has a busy weekend in store.
First, Michael Raupp, a University of Maryland entomologist, will guide a free Wonder Walk, "Amazing Monarchs and Other Butterflies," at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11.
That same evening, at 10:30 p.m., Alex Storrs and Joel Goodman will team up to lead "Night Sky/Dark Sky: The Perseid Meteor Showers." This program runs until 2 a.m. and is also free.
