It's flea market season. For those of you who are flea market shoppers, the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Company will be holding a flea market on June 2 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The flea market will be at the fire house on Route 94, south of Route 144.
For more information, call 410-489-4646. This is a great fundraiser for the fire company that will benefit all of us when they can raise enough money to build a new, fully-equipped fire house.
I mentioned in one of my previous columns that the Boy Scouts were collecting food. This year, they collected 62,114 pounds of food. That is truly unbelievable! The food will go to benefit 27 food pantries in Howard County and five in Baltimore City. Next year's Scouting for Food drive will be held on April 20, 2013; so mark your calendars.
The basketball summer camp with Julius Prezelski is back for a seventh year. The full day camp, which will concentrate on offensive skills, will be held on June 18-20. The Future Stars half-day camp and the full-day offensive skills camp is scheduled for July 16-18, concurrently. The half-day camp ends at noon.
The camp is held at St. Michael's Catholic Church in its state-of-the-art gym. For more information, go to http://www.jphoops.com. Make your reservations now as this camp has been filled to capacity since its inception.
The youth group of St. Michael's Catholic Church will be holding a car wash on June 3 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church's lower parking lot. The cost of the car wash is strictly by donation. All proceeds will go to fund St. Michael's Work Camp, set for June 24-30. Proceeds will go to subsidize the cost of transportation, food and fees for the volunteers working with Habitat for Humanity.
The Concerned Citizens of Western Howard County will hold its annual meeting at the Lisbon Fire Hall on Wednesday, May 30 at 7 p.m. Guest speakers will include; Marsha McLaughlin, the county's director of planning and zoning and William Mackey, executive director of the General Plan.
This will be an opportunity to learn more about how the upcoming Howard County General Plan and Comprehensive Rezoning will affect your community. The county also owns a lot in Daisy and will be asking for ideas for the future use of the property.
Our own Patty Sroka will be doing a talk and book signing on June 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mount Airy Library. Patty's book, "Relentless," is written under her pen name, P.J. O'Dwyer. I recently finished the book, and can tell you it's one of the best mysteries I've read in a long time. I pride myself on identifying the bad guy early on; but this was one book that had me wondering until the very end. I told Patty to keep writing every day because I can't wait for the next book.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
