"Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?" It's probably coming in like gang busters right about now. You probably have more zucchini, string beans, corn, squash, cucumbers and maybe even some vine-ripened tomatoes than you know what to do with. Wouldn't it be great to be able to have some of your garden-fresh produce at meal times during the coming fall, winter and maybe even through the spring? If you don't know the first thing about canning, you're in luck! The University of Maryland Extension service will be sponsoring basic, USDA-approved canning techniques demonstration at the Howard County Fairgrounds on Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. until noon in the 4-H Activities Hall. The cost for the class is $35 and it includes a copy of "So Easy to Preserve", hand-outs and materials. Since this is short-notice, you'll have to register ASAP. Space is limited. Checks should be addressed to Montgomery County EAC and mailed to Carolyn Kulp, 3300 North Ridge Road, Suite 240, Ellicott City, MD, 21043. For more information, contact Rebecca Davis at rdavis3@umd.edu.
